Psychotherapy, (sometimes referred to as "talk therapy", or "counselling") is utilized to treat and address a variety of concerns and issues including mental illnesses and emotional difficulties.
While a patient's individual treatment goals may vary, the general goal of Psychotherapy is to eliminate or control troubling symptoms so that an individual has an improved level of functioning and quality of life. Psychotherapy can also increase one's emotional well-being and facilitate a process of healing and personal growth.
Psychotherapy is considered a “Controlled Act” in Ontario, meaning that it can only be provided by regulated health care providers including Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers.
In order to become licensed to provide the controlled act of Psychotherapy, there are many years of training and supervision involved.
From the Canadian Association of Play Therapy website,
"Play Therapy has been accepted and acknowledged as an important and valued approach for working with children with emotional or behavioural difficulties. Play Therapy is beneficial to a child who is experiencing difficulties in the home, school or community. It is a therapeutic approach for human service professionals and as stated by Virginia Axline, “provides an opportunity for the child to ‘play out’ his or her feelings and problems just as, in certain adult therapy, an individual ‘talks out’ his or her difficulties”. "
Play Therapy is a psychotherapy modality which requires specific training and certification. In Canada, becoming a certified Play Therapist requires 180 hours of (graduate-level) formal training, in addition to 500 hours of supervised practice in Play Therapy.
An Individual who has not had (the above) formalized training to "Play Therapy" is not a play therapist. While some child therapists / adolescent therapists may use toys or play-based techniques in their work with children, teens, or families, that does not necessarily mean they are using Play Therapy or that they are a Play Therapist.
While Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP, Psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Social Worker is covered by many extended health insurance plans.
We recommend calling your insurance (extended benefits provider) to find out if you have coverage for Psychotherapy with a "Registered Psychotherapist" or a "Registered Social Worker".
Occasionally, Child Therapy Halton has Master's level counselling students (in training) who provide low-cost services to children and families in need.
Child Therapy Halton has several different therapists with different clinical fees based on years of experience, expertise, and qualifications (rates range from $125.00 per clinical hour, to $175.00 per clincial hour + applicable taxes).
We also periodically have Master's level counselling students who provide counselling (with supervision) at a reduced rate.

A "Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist" is a trained mental health professional/ Psychotherapist who has specialized training in providing Psychotherapy to children and adolescents (teens).
While some therapists may choose to work with many populations, such as children, teens, adults, seniors, couples and families, the therapists at Child Therapy Halton have chosen "Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy" as their specialty and have dedicated themselves to obtaining education and experience specific to these populations.
Similar to how Doctors choose an area of practice to specialize in (such as surgery, cardiology, psychiatry, etc.), our therapists have chosen to specialize in providing Psychotherapy to children and adolescents.
Providing our patients with high-quality care is our top priority. Because of this, we only bring on therapists who have a significant amount of training and a specialization in working with these populations.
Our therapists have specific training in implementing effective Psychotherapy virtually. We use a variety of tools and approaches to provide high-quality, effective therapy while keeping your child engaged.
Thus far, the virtual therapy we have been providing has been incredibly successful and effective, and the families we work with have told us that they love the convenience of online appointments.
As a bonus, you don't have to travel to our office, wait in the waiting room, or wear a mask during sessions when appointments are done virtually.
It is important to note that even though your child might have struggled with virtual school, does not mean that virtual therapy would not be effective for them. Working 1:1 with a therapist (virtually) is a very different experience than virtual (online) school. In our experience, even children and teens who struggled with online school have thrived in virtual therapy appointments.
Anyone and everyone can benefit from Psychotherapy!
Some people start working with a therapist because they want to work on something specific (anxiety, depression, parental separation/ divorce, etc.). Other people start working with a therapist just to have someone to talk to other than their parents and peers.
Whatever the reason, our therapists would be honoured to help.
